To help your produce stay fresh as long as possible, it helps to get familiar with the preferences of your produce! When it comes to storage, not all produce items have the same needs. If certain foods seem to go bad sooner than you would expect, look up storage recommendations for that particular item. It may also be worthwhile to invest in some specialized storage containers and tools to increase they life of your produce.
Some foods do better at room temperature vs. being refrigerated. Other items are particular about whether they are stored in airtight containers or able to breathe. Some foods spoil faster if washed prior to storing. Most items will last longer if kept in a dark location, or at least out of direct sunlight. Lastly, some foods produce ethylene gas and others are sensitive to it -- it's important that these are stored apart from one another.
Cleaning food contact surfaces such as refrigerator and pantry bins, shelves, and linens regularly also goes a long way toward keeping food fresh longer. Bacteria and molds can go unnoticed but still increase spoilage rates.
